Caffeine in the Endurance World
Caffeine is one of the few performance supplements with strong, repeatable research support across endurance and high-intensity sports. Doses of 3-6 mg per kg of body mass have been shown to provide measurable performance effects in trained athletes.
Where It Shows Up
Most standard sports drinks don't include caffeine. Specific variants do: Tailwind's Raspberry Buzz includes 35 mg caffeine per serve. High5's Energy Drink Caffeine Hit includes 30 mg per serve. Maurten's Gel 100 Caf 100 includes 100 mg caffeine per gel.
What's the Difference From an Energy Drink
Energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster sit at higher caffeine doses (80 mg+ per can) and are generally formulated more around the caffeine + sugar + flavour combination than around hydration mechanics. Caffeinated sports drinks are still sports drinks first; the caffeine is an addition rather than the headline.
Practical Use
For long endurance events, splitting caffeine across the duration is a common strategy - a caffeinated gel or drink at the 2-hour mark, another at 3-4 hours. The aim is sustained alertness and perceived-effort effects rather than a single jolt. Train with the dosing strategy you'll race with.
Personal Tolerance
Caffeine sensitivity varies enormously. Some athletes do fine with 200+ mg pre-race; others find anything above 50 mg gives them jitters or stomach issues. Test in training. Don't introduce caffeine for the first time on race day.
Frequently Asked
How much caffeine helps performance?
Research-supported doses are around 3-6 mg per kg of body mass. For a 70 kg adult that's 200-420 mg - typically split across the day or session.
Are caffeinated sports drinks better?
They suit specific use cases - long endurance events, early-morning training, alertness-required sessions. For general daily hydration, caffeine isn't useful.
Is caffeine a banned substance in sport?
Caffeine is on WADA's monitoring program but not currently banned. It can be detected in urine - some sports federations have their own thresholds.
