The Worksite Hydration Reality
A tradesperson in Brisbane, Perth, or Darwin in summer can be on-site for 8-10 hours in 32°C+ conditions. The sweat losses across a day can match - or exceed - an Ironman triathlete's. The difference is that the IM athlete fuels for one race; tradies do this every working day for months.
The Steady-Sip Approach
Big bottles. Two-litre Esky bottle on the bench plus a 1-litre carry bottle for moving around the site. The pattern is steady sipping every 15-20 minutes rather than big slugs at breaks. Most tradies who do this well have a system - bottle on the workbench, sip after every task, refill at smoko.
What to Drink
Plain water for the baseline. For the hot days, a sodium-containing drink earns its place. Staminade built its identity on the worksite - a scoop in a 2L bottle covers a chunk of the day. Hydralyte tablets work well too. For the hottest days, higher-sodium products (LMNT, Liquid I.V.) earn their place.
Smoko and Lunch
The morning break and lunch are bigger fluid windows than the on-and-off sipping. Use them. A full glass plus the bottle refill plus the food's water content adds up to several hundred ml together.
Don't Cane It After Work
The end-of-shift beer is a long-standing tradition. Alcohol pushes the dehydration deficit deeper, not shallower. If you're going to have one, pair with a glass of water; consider a sodium-containing drink earlier in the evening before alcohol enters the mix. Rehydrating after a long hot day covers this in more detail.
Day-After Recovery
A tradie who finishes a hot day already behind on fluid will start the next day similarly behind. Morning hydration becomes more important. Morning Hydration covers the simple habit.
Frequently Asked
How much water should a tradie drink in summer?
Outdoor work in Australian summer can push daily fluid needs to 4-5+ litres for an active adult. Watch urine colour - pale straw is the target. If you finish the day with dark urine and a flat feeling, you're behind.
What's the best sports drink for tradies?
Should I drink an electrolyte drink instead of water?
Use both. Water as the base, electrolyte mix in a second bottle for the heavy-sweat hours. Drinking only electrolyte mix all day delivers more sodium and sugar than you need; drinking only plain water on a heavy-sweat day under-replaces minerals.
Why am I cramping if I'm drinking plenty of water?
Cramping causes are complex and not all are dehydration-related. Sodium losses combined with heavy fluid intake can contribute. If cramps are recurring, speak to your GP - it may not be a hydration issue alone.
